Shutter Island (2010)Someone is missing.
Shutter Island is the movie that Martin Scorsese’s fans have been waiting excitedly for a long time. It is the adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s book of same name and if you have read the book, you could say that the writer of the screenplay, Laeta Kalogridis, does a very striking job adapting it. Film tells a story which takes places in 1954, the Cold War era. It is a mystery, drama and thriller which does not fall short of any. The main character Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), a U.S Marshal, and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are investigating the disappearance of a criminally insane woman, who had drowned her three children. The mental hospital in question is on a secluded and top secret island. Teddy gets frustrated and confused after every interview with the hospital staff and in time, he begins questioning whether he is sane or not. All the intense and unanswered things happening in that suffocating hospital and on that lonely island keep both the main character and the audience questioning, worrying and there is always a feeling that the time is running out, we do not know why, though. The pieces we see and the maze-like feeling tightens every second, the ending with a major twist puts all those pieces together leaving the audience in awe. The movie with all its casting is a parade of good acting from beginning to the end. Leonardo DiCaprio and his chemistry with his long-time friend Scorsese seems to have worked marvellously. All the other characters have darkly beautiful and good performances as well. About the music, it could be said that it is used only in very dramatic parts as a support for intensifying the scenes, the rest is basically scoreless. This movie lives up to the expectations and exceeds them. It is definitely a piece that needs to be seen and kept.
