Brooklyn's Finest (2010)This is War. This is Brooklyn.
The well known generic director of Training Day and Tears of the Sun, Antoine Fuqua has made a new film of the same kind. Brooklyn’s Finest was written by Michael C. Martin and Fuqua’s directing skills made an impressive connection in the story. The film is about three different, unrelated police officers. We see their different story arcs and it is all tied together neatly in the end. The first story’s main character is Eddie (Richard Gere) who is about to retire from the NYPD, he had dealt with the worst in all his years of work and he is looking forward to his retirement and he does not want to do any work which may be dangerous or big. Unfortunately, due to a new training program in NYPD he has a new rookie partner he needs to train as a veteran police officer. The second story’s main character is Tango (Don Cheadle) whose job as an undercover cop is to bring in the leader of a drug trafficking gang. That mob boss Casanova (Wesley Snipes) is a grim man and Tango befriends him, and eventually Tango does not know where the line is, whose side he is on. He is in a big dilemma and does not know how to solve this problem. The third story is about a financially struggling cop, Sal (Ethan Hawke) who wants to provide his wife and children a better life, better opportunities. However, his police officer salary does not allow this type of life and he begins stealing money from the people in the street with lower life qualities, who commit crimes. He justifies his behaviour thinking that these are “bad” people. In the end, those three cops’ come across in a brutal, bloody and deadly scene which will be shocking for the audience. As a crime thriller with dramatic aspects, the film does it job well. However, the characters are available for more in depth exploration and these opportunities were not used as fruitfully as possible. Still, as a thriller action it is a very watchable film and a representative of the genre.
Starring: Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes
